Veterans Memorial at the Santa Clara City Cemetery

January 25th, 2017:

The City Parks Department is working closely with the Veterans Memorial Committee to finish the design of the proposed Veterans Memorial to be located near the entrance to the Santa Clara Historic Cemetery. The Monument will recognize and show our residents appreciation for the men and women of Santa Clara who have preserved our freedom through service in the US Armed Forces. The City hopes to fund construction of the Memorial using private donations to honor all those past, current, and future Santa Clara Veterans. The Memorial will include 3 large stone monuments including a stone that will be dedicated to those who gave all and prisoners of war. Names will be engraved in this stone near a “Soldiers Cross” along with the inscription “All Gave Some” and “Some Gave All”. A stone will honor the six US Military branches of service and the third stone and pavers will be a place where donors to the monument can honor a Santa Clara Service member.

It has been a difficult task to identify all of these heroes. Public records typically do not track a veteran’s cur-rent location nor where they call home. We need the Community’s help to ensure all veterans receive the recognition they deserve and their sacrifice is preserved for future generations. Residents are being invited to share any knowledge concerning Veterans, their stories or histories for inclusion on the monument and also in a Veterans History Book also being prepared for the Historical Museum. There is no fee to honor these heroic veterans and publish their important legacies. Contact Ditzie Whitehead at the City Office (435-673-6712 ext. 201) with any information regarding veterans, stories or histories.

The Committee hopes to have the monument completed by Memorial Day, May 29th 2017. Over the past several years the City has collected $22,600 of the approximately $50,000 needed for completion. Engineering costs have been donated and the City will donate the labor for construction of the foundation and concrete work. To meet that goal, an additional $25,000 is needed. For a donation for as little as $50, you may honor a veteran. The veteran you honor will become a permanent part of the monument through a single line engraving that provides the name, branch of service, and conflict. Or paver stones can also be purchased for $125 or $250 or more that will provide additional space for veteran’s service information such as rank, medals, and dates served.
